Friday the 13th, a date that has long been associated with bad luck, superstition, and evil. But what many people may not realize is that it's a fascinating tale that goes beyond mere superstition and bad luck, finding its origins in the sacred goddess worship of pagan peoples. Being a less frequent occurrence in a given year, with the 13th of the month falling on a Friday an average of 1.72 times a year in the Gregorian calendar, there are a lot of conflicting beliefs depending on what your cultural background and beliefs may be. For some, Friday the 13th is a day to batten down the hatches and hide themselves away, and for others, it's a holy day in its own right, that is to be honored and embraced.
For us, at the Sacred Wisdom Society, we hold the latter view that Friday the 13th is a sacred day. The significance of Friday in this context cannot be overstated. Known as "Frigg's Day," it was actually named after Frigg (/frɪɡ/; Old Norse: [ˈfriɡː]) a goddess, one of the Æsir, in Germanic mythology. In Norse mythology, the source of most surviving information about her, she is associated with marriage, prophecy, clairvoyance, and motherhood, and dwells in the wetland halls of Fensalir. She was the Queen of Asgard, wife of Odin, and mother of Baldur. Her name translated literally as "beloved" and she was held in very high status amongst the people of the time. Sound like any other Great Lady's you know of?
A quick Google search, regardless of your spiritual beliefs will highlight the origins of the naming of Western days of the week (much like how the names of the planets in our solar system line up with many of the gods and goddesses of ancient cultures—hmm—coincidence?) In many ancient cultures, Friday was considered a day to honor and celebrate Frigg, or the Great Goddess (singular), or all of the goddesses (plural), or the sacred divine feminine that's in all of us, or even simply the power of the womb to bring forth life.
The beliefs when paganism are vast, with people of many different backgrounds and traditions finding their own way to connect to divinity and the universe. What many pagans had in common, though, was a true reverence for nature and the energy that connects us all, often brought into existence through the goddesses we can connect to and understand on a smaller scale, who symbolized different aspects of life, such as the moon, animals, trees, liminal space, healing, elements, etc. This reverence for the divine feminine led to Friday being seen as an auspicious day for honoring these goddesses and our own role that we play in the grand universe that we live in.
The number 13 has long been associated with mysticism and sacredness in various cultures around the world. From ancient civilizations to modern-day beliefs, the significance of this number has captured the imagination of many. One fascinating aspect of the number 13 is its connection to lunar cycles. The lunar cycle, which spans approximately 29.5 days, represents the phases of the moon as it orbits around the Earth, with approximately 12-13 lunar cycles in a single solar cycle (one year). This alignment between the sacred number 13 and lunar cycles adds another layer of mystique to their significance, with many pagans recognizing this connection symbolizes harmony between celestial rhythms and earthly existence.
Furthermore, many ancient cultures revered both numbers separately for their own unique symbolism. The number 13 often represents transformation, rebirth, and spiritual growth. This, with lunar cycles’ association with feminine energy, intuition, and cyclical patterns found in nature, makes understanding why the number 13 is considered sacred even more intriguing.
Paganism played a significant role in shaping these beliefs surrounding Friday the 13th, which was a rare conjunction between the already beloved day of Frigg or the goddess and the symbolic number 13. Over time, however, as societal norms shifted and religious beliefs changed, these pagan traditions were demonized by those seeking to establish new power structures.
According to folklorists, there is no evidence for the superstition of an unlucky Friday the 13th before the 19th century. Rumors of Friday the 13th being negatively associated with Christian beliefs, such as Jesus Christ being crucified on this day took hold of people over the last couple centuries. Other links to 13 and Friday came about with a different view of the betrayal of Jesus Christ by Judas, with 13 people being present at the Last Supper, the Norse tale of the god Baldur dying after the god Loki, a 13th guest at a dinner party arrived and mischief ensured. But regardless of how these tales seemingly ended, they all played roles in the death and rebirth cycles told through stories at the time and were never intended to be bad omens of a Friday falling on the 13th of the month.
Even in modern times, pop-culture films have harped on the fears of people surrounding Friday the 13th, known as paraskevidekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobia, to further perpetuate narratives of freak accidents, serial killers being on the loose, and the like.
It is important to recognize, though, that behind this superstition lies a rich history of sacredness and reverence for the divine feminine. By understanding its origins in pagan goddess worship, we can shed light on the true meaning behind Friday the 13th — an opportunity to reconnect with our own spirituality and embrace the power of nature's cycles once again.
There are many ways to honor the divine feminine, goddesses, or even your own sacred feminine energy on Friday the 13th. Through rituals, self-care practices, and more, you can tap into the sacred energy of the feminine and foster a deep connection with the divine.
Rituals play a significant role in honoring the divine feminine. Self-care is another vital aspect of honoring the divine feminine. Engage in activities that bring you joy and help you recharge — whether it's practicing yoga or meditation, indulging in herbal baths or aromatherapy, or simply spending time in nature, find what works best for you.
Incorporating symbols of femininity into your daily life can also be a beautiful way to honor the divine feminine. Adorn your sacred space with images or statues of goddesses who embody qualities such as love, compassion, strength, and wisdom. Wear crystals like rose quartz or moonstone that resonate with feminine energy. Embrace flowing fabrics and colors that evoke feelings of femininity within you.
Remember that honoring the divine feminine is not just about external practices; it's also about cultivating a deep sense of respect for yourself as a woman or person who identifies with femininity. Embrace your unique strengths and gifts as they align with this powerful energy. Celebrate your intuition, creativity, and compassion — all those qualities that make up the essence of femininity.

Embrace the beauty of the divine feminine within you and let it guide you on a path of empowerment, love, and spiritual growth.
What are your thoughts on Friday the 13th?
If you're new to paganism or esoteric wisdom, you may be wondering, why the obsession with the moon? For me, I like to view topics like these both scientifically and spiritually. From a scientific perspective, the moon influences the tides of the ocean, the biggest body of water on our planet, so why wouldn't we think it also naturally influences our bodies (which are made up of a large percentage of water) too? Additionally, women specifically, are often naturally synced with the moon on a hormonal level, with many women experiencing their cycle in alignment with the same phase of the moon month after month if they are on a true 28-day cycle.
Spiritually speaking, the moon is a symbol of wisdom, the death and rebirth cycle, and is connected to the Great Goddess. So, when we align our routines in conjunction with the lunar cycles, it can feel like we are more aligned energetically with the way things are happening in nature.
Lunar cycles have long been associated with spiritual practices such as paganism and moon magic. The moon's energy is believed to influence our emotions, intuition, and overall well-being. By aligning our lifestyle to match the different phases of the moon, we can tap into its healing power and find balance in our lives.
Working with lunar cycles allows us to harness the energy of each phase for specific purposes. During the new moon, we can cleanse, release, set intentions, and plant seeds for new beginnings. As the moon waxes, we can focus on growth and manifestation. The full moon is a time of heightened energy and amplifying things of importance in our lives. And as the moon wanes, we can reflect, recharge, and prepare for a new cycle.
By incorporating lunar practices into our daily lives, we open ourselves up to a deeper connection with nature and ourselves. We become more attuned to our own rhythms and learn to honor both light and shadow aspects within us.
The Waning Crescent

This phase is characterized by a half-moon shape, with the right side illuminated in the northern hemisphere and the left side illuminated in the southern hemisphere.

It is believed that during this phase, our intentions are amplified, allowing us to manifest our desires more effectively. By tapping into the magic of the new moon, we can set powerful intentions for healing ourselves and those around us.
The energy of the new moon also provides an opportunity to release what no longer serves us. Just as the moon sheds its old skin during this phase, we too can let go of negative emotions, limiting beliefs, and anything else that holds us back from living our fullest potential. By harnessing the energy of the new moon, we can cleanse ourselves on a spiritual level and make space for positive growth.
Whether you believe in lunar magic or not, there is something undeniably enchanting about aligning ourselves with the cycles of nature. The new moon serves as a gentle reminder that life is cyclical and ever-changing. It encourages us to embrace change and embrace our own innate power to heal and transform.
So tonight, when the night sky is at its darkest, take a moment to connect with the new moon’s magical energy. Set your intentions for healing and cleansing. Embrace the power of the new moon and allow it to guide you on your journey towards self-discovery and growth. Remember, within you lies infinite potential - just like the ever-renewing cycle of the moon itself.
Working With the New Moon
One way to honor the new moon is by cleansing your crystals and divination tools. This can be done by placing them under the moon overnight or using smoke from sacred herbs or incenses. By purifying these tools, you create a clean slate for their energies to work with you.
Another beautiful practice is creating new moon water. Simply place a jar of water outside or on a windowsill under the new moon overnight. This charged water can be used for various purposes like cleansing your space or adding intention to your rituals and spells.
In addition to external cleansing, it's important to cleanse ourselves internally as well during this lunar phase. Take some time for self-reflection and engage in shadow work if you’re ready to do so - exploring your hidden emotions, fears, and limiting beliefs. By acknowledging and releasing what no longer serves you, you make space for personal growth as we move forward with the lunar phase through the rest of the month.
To further enhance your connection with the new moon energy, consider performing a release ritual. Write down any negative thoughts or patterns that you wish to let go of on a piece of paper, then burn it as an act of surrendering them to the universe. As the smoke rises into the sky, visualize yourself being freed from these limitations.
Remember, working with the new moon is about setting intentions, embracing transformation, and aligning yourself with cosmic energies. Embrace this magical time and allow its power to guide you on your journey towards self-discovery and manifestation.
The lunar cycle is an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon that has captivated people for centuries. The Moon's orbit around Earth takes 29.5 days, making it a celestial body with a regular and predictable pattern of phases that have been tracked since ancient times. These phases are caused by the angle between the Sun, Earth, and Moon - when these three celestial bodies align in a certain way, we get to experience each of the eight distinct Moon phases from New Moon to Full Moon and back again.
In my practice, I like to specifically time my rituals, meditations, and workings with the respective phase that the moon is in. Many people focus solely on the full moon and new moon for their workings, but each phase of the lunar cycle contains its own unique magical energy and resonance that can be used to your advantage by understanding its capabilities.
One way to work with the energy of the moon is by setting intentions; this involves focusing on what you want to manifest during each phase of the moon. You can also make ‘moon water’ by leaving a glass or jar of water outside to absorb lunar energies before using it in rituals. Charging crystals under the light of the moon is another helpful practice, as it amplifies their healing properties and helps them hold onto their energies longer. Journaling, shadow work, inner healing, higher self connection, crafting, cleansing, and so on are things that can be done at any time, but there are points in time where these practices can have even greater impact and strength based on the micro and macro energies that influence our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves.
One of the most important things I also like to take into consideration is how the respective lunar cycle that we're in sync with the overall wheel of the year, which is also divided into eight segments with the eight pagan holidays that we celebrate throughout the year. For example, during Litha, which is the pagan holiday that aligns with full moon energy (or the point when light is at its strongest/fullest), the full moon that occurs in conjunction with this time is especially powerful because the lunar phase AND wheel of the year are aligning for amplified energy.
The moon's cycle consists of eight distinct phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. Each phase is characterized by a particular fractional illumination of the lunar hemisphere facing Earth. The New Moon marks the start of the lunar cycle as it passes in front of the Sun from our perspective on Earth. During this time, only a very thin part of its illuminated surface is visible. As it continues moving around its orbit after the new moon phase, it gradually gets more illuminated until we reach a Full Moon, which is when it looks completely lit up from our perspective. We then move through each waning phase before arriving back at another New Moon.
New Moon Phase. The new moon at the time of Yule is exceptionally powerful and brings an energy of new beginnings, the chance to start anew, and resetting intentions. When the new moon arrives, it is an opportunity to set magical intentions for a fresh start. Take stock of what has come before and decide what you want to manifest in the weeks ahead. Ask yourself questions such as: What do I need to nurture within myself? What kind of changes should I make in my life? Which areas of my life would benefit from focus and attention?
Waxing Crescent Moon Phase. The waxing crescent moon at the time of Imbolc is exceptionally powerful and brings the energy of taking action on our goals and living up to our potential. The waxing crescent moon can be used as a catalyst in transforming your wishes into physical reality. To make use of this powerful energy, prepare yourself prior to setting your magical intention by visualizing how you would like it to look once it has manifested into physical form. This helps focus your energy and create momentum towards achieving what you desire. Use affirmations and mantras throughout the process to reaffirm that this will come true for you. Once ready, release the magical intention during the waning crescent phase and watch the transformation happen.
First Quarter Moon Phase. The first quarter moon at the time of Ostara is exceptionally powerful and brings the energy of courage needed to maintain momentum and stay true to our visions. The first quarter moon is a special time to set intentions and focus on creating positive change in our lives. It's a time for us to tap into the power of the moon and let its energy guide us toward achieving our goals. At this time, it's important to take some time for reflection and focus on what we want to manifest in our lives. Meditating, visualizing, or journaling are all great ways to start engaging with this magical phase of the moon. With clarity and dedication, we can use this powerful lunar energy to create meaningful changes that will bring us closer to our deepest desires.
Waxing Gibbous Moon Phase. The waxing gibbous moon at the time of Beltane (also known as May Day) is exceptionally powerful and brings an energy of spiritual growth and encouragement as we nurture what has been created so far. The waxing gibbous moon is a powerful time for magical intentions and working with the energies of the divine feminine. Working within these energies can bring about transformation, abundance, protection, strength, and personal empowerment. It is a time to embrace your highest potential and allow yourself to manifest positive change in your life. You can use this energy to draw in prosperity or deepen existing relationships. Whatever you desire will be amplified when you set an intention under the power of the waxing gibbous moon.
Full Moon Moon Phase. The full moon at the time of Litha (also known as Midsummer) is exceptionally powerful and brings an energy that illuminates us with power, allowing us to recognize where we are in the cycle and assess how far we have come. The full moon is a powerful time of the month for manifesting your deepest desires and realizing your dreams. When you set an intention under the light of the full moon, it carries a magical power that can bring it to fruition. Therefore, it is important to choose your intentions with careful attention and make sure they are aligned with your true purpose in life. With each full moon, you can harness the power of intention to create positive change in your life and those around you.
Waning Gibbous Moon Phase. The waning gibbous moon at the time of Lammas is exceptionally powerful and brings an energy of stillness, wisdom, and a chance to reflect and refocus. The waning gibbous moon is the perfect time to focus on intentions that involve manifesting, releasing, and letting go. Use this time to reflect on what no longer serves your highest self and let it go. If you have something in mind that you wish to bring into your life, use the waning gibbous moon's energy to create an intention or a plan of action for making it happen. This phase of the moon is also beneficial for creating rituals intended to help cultivate personal healing and growth. No matter what intention, spell, or ritual you are working with during this phase, remember that it will always be amplified by love - so take care not to rush through the process, but instead infuse it with positive thoughts and emotions.
Third/Last Quarter Moon Phase. The last quarter moon at the time of Mabon is exceptionally powerful and brings an energy of letting go, allowing us to surrender whatever no longer serves our highest purpose. The last quarter moon is the time to focus our efforts on releasing and letting go. As we approach this phase of the lunar cycle, it's important to take a few moments to reflect on what we want to release from our lives. This could be a belief system, an attitude, or any other energy that no longer serves us. We can use magical intentions during this time, such as visualizing a bright white light surrounding us and carrying away all of those negative energies. We can also call upon helpful spiritual guides and ancestors for assistance in releasing what no longer serves us. By setting powerful magical intentions during the waning moon, we can move forward with a sense of clarity and renewed purpose.
Waning Crescent Moon Phase. The waning crescent moon at the time of Samhain is exceptionally powerful and brings an energy of closure as we prepare to initiate the cycle anew. The waning crescent moon is an excellent time for setting intentions to close out a cycle. This is the time to release what no longer serves us and make space for new energies to enter. Like releasing a burden that has been weighing you down, or a fear that's been sabotaging your progress. It's also a great opportunity to cast away self-doubt and set boundaries around your own values and beliefs. Practicing gratitude during this phase helps us to recognize how far we have come and all the blessings in our lives, allowing us to move forward with faith and trust in ourselves. When connecting with the waning crescent moon, remember to be gentle with yourself, forgive any shortcomings, and celebrate each small victory – every step counts!
Weaving lunar energy AND the wheel of the year into our daily lives can be a powerful way to stay connected to the energy that's occurring on micro and macro scales. Working with the lunar cycle can help us tune in to our intuition, live in harmony with nature, and deepen our connection to spirit. Through this practice, we honor ourselves by honoring the natural rhythms that makeup life on Earth. As you work with these energies, remember that it’s all about creating balance - finding moments of both rest and action, stillness and movement. As we align our lives with the phases of the moon and the wheel of the year, we unlock an even greater potential within ourselves.
